You may be the type of individual who learns better by hands on experience but in this industry, your book learning or theory is critically important. Almost everything you will be carrying out in your hands on applications is what you will learn in your theory part of the training. Once you are comfortable with the knowledge of how to go about your technical applications, you will find it much easier to perform these tasks. There are no shortcuts in learning to become a hairdresser. Even upon graduation from your training, you will remain in the learning mode for many years to come. Once you have graduated as a Hairstylist and spent a few years as an employee in the Industry you may get the desire to open your own business. At first, you may feel it is beyond your reach but in most cases, it doesn?t have to be that way. After all the Salon owner where you currently work did, so why can?t you? That doesn?t mean that you should make your decision in haste but giving it serious though may very well open some opportunities for you that you didn?t realize were there.
There are advantages and disadvantages to owning your own business. Its comforting to know the exact amount of your paycheck each week. It?s nice to be able to walk out of the Salon door at night and know you are finished for the day. These are just two examples of the benefits of working for someone else. The downside is that you have no control or input over the Salon you are working for you must follow the rules and there may be no place for advancement.
As a successful Hairdresser, you may not realize that you possess many of the skill requirements of being a business owner. You know the importance of time commitment and being punctual. You know how to multi task and you have great people skills. You are able to fill multiple facets of a business such as sales promotion, basic accounting skills and even being a receptionist. You are used to working long hours.
An ideal start up business could very well me a mobile hairdressing business. It wouldn?t take a great deal of capital to get started. Most likely, you have the majority of tools and equipment required for the trade. Also, be sure that you aren?t going to be dependant of the new business to carry you financially for the first little while. It takes time to build a business to the point of being profitable.
